PXI DAQ System for Jet Engine Simulation Testing

Customer Case

The PXI Systems Alliance (PXISA) wanted to demonstrate a PXI based data acquisition system capable of supporting high channel counts of multi-vendor instrumentation working together within a single PXI based chassis mainframe system.

The PXISA multi-vendor based demonstration system packed a ground breaking 892 channels in a single cPCI/PXI chassis mainframe designed for real world jet engine simulation testing. This PXI based jet engine simulation testing system was originally presented and demonstrated at an Autotestcon exhibit to mark the 10th anniversary of the PXI standard.

Prior to the PXI interface standard, it would have been difficult if not impossible to implement such a high channel count data acquisition system within a single chassis mainframe. The PXI based demonstration system, which acquired data from a jet engine simulation, included hardware and software from six PXISA members: KineticSystems, GaGe, Geotest, Keithley Instruments, ADLINK, and National Instruments.

KineticSystems Case Solution

KineticSystems integrated 10 different 3U/6U cPCI/PXI instumentation modules into a single PXI based chassis from Geotest.

The cPCI/PXI system collected temperature, pressure, flow, RPM, and ARINC-429 measurements from the jet engine simulation. It included cPCI/PXI instrumentation modules for digital I/O, analog-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analog (D/A) converters, signal conditioning, digitizers, frequency counters, and multi-function data acquisition. Both 3U and 6U form factor cPCI/PXI modules were used and integrated within a single chassis mainframe.

The following block diagram figure and tables detail how the instruments interface to the jet engine simulation, the equipment used in the cPCI/PXI system, and the channel type and count for each cPCI/PXI instrument.
